Taste Washington Grand Tasting Day 2

Well if I didn’t taste enough on day 1 then smell, swish and spit kicked in again. Tried to get to as many tables as possible but would need a day 3 to do that next year.

  • 2009 Saviah Cellars Syrah The Funk Estate – USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
    Glasvin Universal. Revisited this wine later in the day and declared wine of the Taste Washington Event. While not quite 97 for me it is really close. Stone, white pepper, underbrush, funk, roasted meats, blueberries, cherry and violets. This is a showstopper and what Walla Walla Syrah is all about. 96.5 (96 pts.)

  • 2021 De La Luz Tempranillo Echo West Vineyard – USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
    Glasvin Universal. Well I am not a fan of Tempranillo from Washington. I find this grape is not a good fit. Well friends this is a good fit!!! Red currants, clay, floral, spices, dried flowers, earth and wood. Medium plus finish. Nice concentration and acidity. Really liking this one! (93 pts.)

Very good wines from Seth and the team. Look forward to trying more. Audrey’s Red Wine will be released this summer and was my favorite of their lineup.

One of the better Bordeaux Blend producers in Washington for the money.

    Glasvin Universal. What a difference from the tasting room as they had it open 3 days vs. this pop and pour. Cherry, spices, blueberries, earth and floral notes. For sure very good but this will do well with time. 91+ (91 pts.)
  • 2021 Matthews Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve – USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
    Glasvin Universal. Very good again and tasted at the Woodinville location earlier in the week. Floral, wood, cherry, cassis, minerals and dark chocolate. Medium finish. (92 pts.)

    Glasvin Universal. Well the scoring with the 81 is most accurate of the reviews and this was barely drinkable. Total label wine. Thin and lacks fruit. Some earth and spice. Short finish. Spit this out instantly and had to get some food to cleanse the palate. (70 pts.)
  • 2019 Secret Squirrel Red Rhone Blend – USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain
    Glasvin Universal. One if not the worst tables at the show. Hate to bash a wine but this was almost tasteless. Thin and watered down. Dust, earth and some fruit. No the palate was not comprised with all these notes as plenty of good ones right before this and plenty after. (75 pts.)
