Gaja Underwhelms

Well to say this was the worst wine presentation I have ever attended would be an understatement. A host that give the corporate speech and the audience is having their own conversations 30 minutes in is never good. The wines were ok but nothing to get excited about. Way overpriced. The worst part is the Barbaresco which was expensive was put into a decanter with soap. The Midwest Rep said it was how it was supposed to taste like and discredited my friend Bruna for bringing it up. The reaction of the attendees when they smelled this wine was classic. Everyone said soap. Now whether you said Dawn or Palmolive that is your cup of tea. After the event I emailed Gaja and have not heard back in two days which is a joke. I will never buy any wine from them again. The pours were also microscopic.

Here are the results.

CellarTracker! Gaja Tasting

  • 2023 Idda Sicilia – Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
Glasvin Kane. Rich wine with stone, honey, crust, lemon, apricots and orange peel. Nice acidity. (91 pts.)
  • 2023 Ca’ Marcanda (Gaja) Magari – Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
Glasvin Kane. Chemical/plastic taste. Menthol, cranberry, earth and spice. No rating as need to revisit another bottle.
  • 2022 Gaja Langhe Sito Moresco – Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Glasvin Kane. A rather light styled wine. For sure overpriced at $70.00. Raspberries, stones, menthol, white flowers and earth. Short to medium finish. Easy pass at the price point. (89 pts.)
  • 2021 Gaja Barolo Dagromis – Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Glasvin Kane. A hot wine with red hots, dust, spices, dark fruits, smoke and rose petals. This needs some serious time and just not ready. 88-93. (88 pts.)
  • 2022 Gaja Barbaresco – Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Glasvin Kane. Well the first pour of this was dish soap. Someone forget to rinse the decanter. Really embarrassing. So they opened another bottle and much better but hard to believe anyone would pay $350 a bottle for this. Should cost around $55. Mild funk, leather, underbrush, violets, red currants and spice. Medium finish. Not a good buy. (92 pts.)

Completely overpriced wines and so many better.
