Last summer Cakebread was one of the wineries that came to the Celebrate Walla Walla Festival in July. Honestly my brother and I thought they were kind of a commercial winery but they are a legit, quality producer. Their Chardonnay was better than anything Washington poured at all the events and the Cabernets stood up to the best of Washington. Fast forward to March 1st at Sunfish Cellars in Lilydale, MN.
I am one of the biggest if not the biggest haters of Paso Robles Cabernets in the world. Justin, Austin Hope and especially Daou make some of the most sloppy, overripe Cabernets in the world. Tasting process people. When I looked at the label of this wine I just saw Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles and thought no but I have an open mind on all wines until I tasted them. Recently just gave Veuve Clicquot NV Champagne so anything is possible. The owner Bill Miller brought this wine in and good call Bill! While it is a little fruit forward it is not over the top.
Here is my unbiased review on this wine.
- 2022 Bezel Cabernet Sauvignon from the Cakebread Family – USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (3/1/2025)
Walla Walla & Oregon Planning Event at Sunfish Cellars; 2/28/2025-3/1/2025 (Sunfish Cellars/I Nonni Minneapolis, MN): Probably the best paso cab I have tasted. Nice fruit, floral, spice, minerals and earth. (90 points)
Paso makes good Rhône style wines
